What Size Kubota Tractor Is Right for Me in Southeast Louisiana?
One of the questions we hear every day at our Covington showroom is simple: "How big of a tractor do I actually need?" The honest answer is that the right tractor isn't about buying the biggest machine — it's about matching horsepower, weight, and hydraulics to your property and the jobs you actually do. Here's a practical guide built around Kubota's lineup and the real-world conditions we see across St. Tammany Parish and the rest of southeast Louisiana.
Start With Your Property, Not the Tractor
Property size is the first filter. As a rule of thumb:
- 1–10 acres (large lawn, small hobby farm): a sub-compact or compact tractor is usually all you need
- 10–20 acres (pasture, food plots, small farming): a compact utility tractor earns its keep
- 20+ acres or agricultural work: a full utility/ag tractor is the right tool
But acreage alone doesn't tell the whole story — the tasks matter just as much. Mowing three acres of lawn and shredding three acres of weeds are two very different jobs.
Kubota's Tractor Lineup at a Glance
BX Series — Sub-Compact (16.6–24.8 HP)
The BX series is Kubota's lawn-friendly machine: mowing decks, a garden tiller, light loader work, and general property upkeep. Its tight footprint gets through gates and works in spaces bigger tractors simply can't reach. Explore the full BX Series, the BX23S with its factory backhoe, and the B01 Series (BX1880, BX2380, BX2380UV).
LX Series — Compact (20.9–40 HP)
The LX series steps up in capability while staying nimble. It's a favorite for landscaping, hauling, and digging, with stronger hydraulics and more lift capacity than the BX. See the full LX Series — models like the LX2620, LX3520, and LX4020 pair well with a loader and a wide range of implements.
L Series — Compact Utility (24.1–62 HP)
Once grading, tilling, food plot prep, or heavier loader work enters the picture, the Standard L and Grand L series take over. This is the sweet spot for small-scale farming and serious property maintenance around Louisiana acreage. Compare the Standard L Series and the Grand L70 Series to find your fit.
M Series — Utility & Agriculture (49.3–141.4 HP)
For large acreage, hay production, or cattle operations, the M series delivers the horsepower and heft for heavy-duty implement work — including the big rotary cutters and shredders that handle rough Louisiana pasture. Browse the M Series, M4 Series, MX Series, M6 Series, and M60 Series.
Match the Tractor to the Job (and the Implement)
The single most common mistake we see is buying a tractor that's too small for its implement. Implement compatibility is determined by PTO horsepower — a rotary cutter or tiller needs a certain minimum PTO output to do its job without lugging the engine down. Decide what you want to run behind the tractor first, then size the tractor to it.
Other things to weigh:
- Lift capacity: heavier implements and loaded buckets need hydraulic capacity, not just HP
- Transmission: hydrostatic (HST) is easiest for loader work and mowing; gear-drive suits row-crop and heavy agricultural work
- 4WD: most Kubota tractors offer it, and in our wet, uneven clay soil it's worth having — spring and summer rains can turn a two-wheel-drive tractor into a parked one
Why Kubota?
Every Kubota tractor is powered by a Kubota-engineered diesel engine, known industry-wide for longevity and reliability — and backed by strong warranty coverage. When you size the machine correctly, that engine and drivetrain will outwork the property for decades.
